County Agencies - Connexions Service
What is the Connexions Service?
Connexions is a exciting national service, which was launched in Lancashire in April 2002. The new service offers all young people, aged 13 to 19, expert guidance, advice and support from qualified professionals to help them make important decisions about their life. In some circumstances young people with a learning difficulty or disability may not be ready to move on at 19. In these instances Connexions support may be provided up to 25. Support offered is based on an individual young person's needs from a named Personal Adviser or through one of our Connexions Centres.
The vision for the Connexions Service in Lancashire is to enable all young people to realise their full potential. To do this we work closely with schools and colleges, the Youth Service, Lancashire Learning and Skills Council, employers, training providers and a wide range of other organisations providing advice and support, to meet the needs of local young people.
What is a Personal Adviser?
Personal Advisers are central to the Connexions Service. They offer support to young people so that they can make important decisions about their lives, encouraging them to continue learning while helping them to overcome any barriers they might face as they move on.
A young person may see their Personal Adviser in school, college, sixth form, where they are training or in a local Connexions Centre.
What is a Connexions Centre?
Connexions Lancashire has 18 Connexions Centres where young people, parents, carers and guardians can go to get expert advice on a range of issues from an Adviser.
In a Connexions Centre you can access up to date information resources on a range of topics affecting young people as well as specialist computer-aided guidance packages and access to the internet.
Current vacancies for young people are also displayed in Centres. Connexions Lancashire's Youth Charter, written for and by local young people, explains what young people are entitled to and what they can expect from the Connexions Service locally.
