County Agencies - National Health Service in Lancashire
The National Health Service in Lancashire works via a number of NHS organisations
to commission care, to provide care and to encourage other bodies to act
in a way complimentary to improving health care.
On 1st April 2002, the existing 5 Health Authorities (East Lancashire,
North West Lancashire, South Lancashire, Morecambe Bay and North Cumbria)
merged, forming the Cumbria and Lancashire Health Authority.
Locally, NHS services are provided by a range of organisations including
specialist Ambulance (Lancashire Ambulance NHS Trust), Mental Health (Lancashire
Care NHS Trust) and Acute Hospital Trusts based in the areas of Blackburn,
Blackpool, Burnley, Chorley, Preston & Lancaster.
Primary Care Trusts have been created for Lancashire between October 2000
and April 2002.
They have 3 main functions:
- health needs assessment and improvement;
- securing services for the population (i.e. direct provision by the PCT and Commissioning by the PCT from NHS and other organisations);
- securing co-operation between health and social care and other care providers, i.e. partnerships.
Primary Care Trusts are thus partners with other organisations in a range of health and social care related initiatives including Community Safety/Crime & Disorder and Local Strategic Partnerships.
