Community Safety Strategy
Crime and Disorder Act 1998
The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 gave local authorities, the Police and a variety of other key partners specific new responsibilities for the prevention of crime and disorder. Specifically, in relation to this document, the Act requires all these partners to co-operate in the development and implementation of a strategy for tackling crime and disorder in their area. This is the Community Safety Strategy.
What is Community Safety?
Community Safety is concerned with more than crime and aims to get to the heart of what disrupts people's quality of life. It has been defined as: “The concept of community based action to inhibit and remedy the causes and consequences of criminal, intimidatory and other related antisocial behaviour. Its purpose is to secure sustainable reductions in crime and the fear of crime in local communities. Its approach is based on the formation of multi-agency partnerships between the public, private and voluntary sectors to formulate and introduce community based measures against crime.”
