Wyre District - Crime Audit 2002-05

In July 1998 the Crime & Disorder Act was passed and was seen as one of the most significant legislative changes brought about by the current Government. The Crime & Disorder Act established the need for local crime reduction partnerships to be created as local authority areas were tasked with reducing crime and disorder and the responsibility for this was to be shared equally between the Borough Council, County Council and the Police. As a result of this legislation crime and disorder reduction partnerships were established nationally to firstly identify local crime and disorder issues and then to create and implement three-year strategies aimed at delivering reduction targets.

The Government recognised that a reduction in crime on the ground is best achieved by the Police working with other organisations in the Local Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership set up under the Crime & Disorder Act.

During the course of the last three years Wyre Borough Council, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Constabulary and many other agencies and organisations have worked together to reduce Crime and Disorder for the community of Wyre. Several key areas of concern that were identified during the last audit of 1998 have received particular attention including the Government identified Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPI) crimes of domestic burglary, vehicle crime and street robbery. Agencies that have previously worked independently of each other have now adopted a fuller more joined up approach to tackling serious community problems and improving the quality of life for our communities.

The Wyre Community Safety Partnership recognises the vital role to be played by all sections of the community to assist in reducing crime and disorder and developing safer places to live. Throughout the life span of this audit and subsequent strategy, ongoing consultation will take place with the people of Wyre and the Partnership will seek involvement of local communities in delivering Community Safety in Wyre.
