MADE Frequently Asked Questions

What is MADE?

MADE is short for Multi-Agency Data Exchange. The project team collect and process data on behalf of the agencies responsible for working towards a Lancashire that is a safe place to grow, live and work.

Why was MADE set up?

The 1998 Crime & Disorder Act recognised that by working together, local authorities, police, fire and health services could tackle crime and disorder more effectively and set up Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRP) in each district. In 2006 the Police and Justice Act required CDRPs to produce an annual strategic assessment and community safety plan. In addition, the agencies who work at a county level are also obliged to produce a community safety agreement, detailing where value is added by working together to support the CDRPs. The local community safety plans and the county community safety agreement are used to direct resources from the partnership into the areas where they will be most effective.

Data from across the partnership is required In order to inform strategic assessments and monitor the progress of interventions. Each partner has its own computer systems and data collection techniques, therefore the Multi-Agency Data Exchange (MADE) project was set up to provide a central data collection and processing function. Partners can download spreadsheets containing ward profiles or query the on-line database from the restricted access MADE website.

Why have the MADE Partners launched Lancashire MADE Public?

We feel it is important to let people know about community safety issues in their neighbourhood in order to make informed decisions. Most people hear about crime by word of mouth or through the media and don’t have a really accurate picture of what’s going on. By showing you what is happening and where, we hope you’ll be reassured about the safety of your neighbourhood. We also want to provide a resource for community groups and neighbourhood watch schemes.

Who can access MADE?

For the public, facts about your area can be accessed from the Lancashire Statistics page on this website.

For practitioners, MADE products are available for download via the MADE website www.saferlancashire.co.uk/MADE

Access to this website is limited to members of the MADE Partnership.

What is a Ward?

Lancashire has 302 wards. Electoral wards/divisions are the key building block of UK administrative geography, being the spatial units used to elect local government councillors. For more information visit www.statistics.gov.uk/geography/electoral_wards.asp

How do I find my ward?

There are 3 options; type in your full postcode in the box provided in the top right hand corner of the screen OR select your ward from the drop down box OR click through the map using your mouse cursor. To reselect your ward, click on the Statistics - Lancashire MADE Public menu item.

How do I interpret the table?

Because wards are of different sizes, it is difficult to compare crime levels in one area with another. It is more useful to look at crime rates. These show how many out of a given number of people or households are likely to experience this offence in a year. The example in the table below may help you interpret the data.

Total Recorded Crime – an example

Actual Crimes/Incidents Rate per thousand population, except for domestic burglary which is rate per thousand households
December 2005 to November 2006 December 2006 to November 2007 Year on year difference December 2005 to November 2006 December 2006 to November 2007 Percentage change Preston district average (December 2006 to November 2007) Lancashire county average (December 2006 to November 2007)
281 231 -50 79.8 65.6 -17.8% 140.6 90.1
There were 281 recorded crimes in the 12 months ended 30 November 06 There were 231 recorded crimes in the 12 months ended 30 November 07 There was a reduction of 50 crimes between the 2 periods There were 79.8 crimes for every 1000 people living in this ward There were 65.6 crimes for every 1000 people living in this ward There was a 17.8% reduction in the rate between these 2 periods The rate per thousand for this ward is below the average for the district. The rate per thousand for this ward is below the average for the county.

Please note that the rates for town and city centres will be distorted because the residential population is very small but the visiting population relatively high. Some wards which have artificially high rates for this reason are town centre Preston, Talbot in Blackpool and Dukes in Lancaster.

How do I use the maps?

When you open up the mapping tool, it will automatically centre onto your ward. To turn a layer on or off, tick the grey boxes. All layers show you a thematic map of rate per thousand population or households (domestic burglary only) for all wards in Lancashire.

You can use the zoom and pan tools to move around the County. The maps are graded from dark purple (a high rate of incidents) through to white (a low rate of incidents). A legend is shown in the top left of the window.

To get information about the exact rate for the ward, please click on the symbol and then click on the ward of interest. For best results, just turn one layer on at a time. This is because the layers should not be combined to give a false picture. You can access other layers, for example schools, by using the drop down menu labelled ‘select map category’.

It is a valid method to overlay point data, such as schools, on top of community safety information, such as anti-social behaviour.

What is the definition of the indicators shown?

To find out what is covered by each incident or crime type, please click on the metadata link.

When will the data next be updated?

The data is updated monthly, usually at the start of the month, one month in arrears.

How does this local crime data compare to national crime levels?

For information on the national picture of crime, please look at the crime research monitor.

Who compiles the data?

The data is supplied by MADE Partners to the MADE project team who process it and upload it to the MADE database, which is hosted on a secure server at Lancashire County Council
